We knew it was coming, and now we know who got there first — Chrysler will be first to eliminate “unsightly dangling power cords” in its vehicles by offering in-vehicle wireless charging, with the help of its Mopar parts and service brand.

The 2013 Dodge Dart will be first to market with the technology when it arrives in dealerships in the second quarter this year.

A power bin Chrysler promises will be integrated seamlessly will measure 21 cm x 24 cm x 8.25 cm and be installed just below the centre stack in front of the centre console. A built-in charging grid is activated when customers place in it their battery-powered device; the unit starts to charge when the vehicle is started. A purpose-designed phone case for a variety of smartphones is included.

Other Mopar firsts include vehicle-information smartphone apps and electronic owners’ manuals.
