With a spectacular display in front of the Detroit Cobo Hall, Chrysler unveiled its 2009 Ram pickup truck -- completely redesigned but with the same unmistakeable attributes.

This Ram is easily recognizable with its commanding presence and massive grille. However, the hood is now made of aluminum and slightly exceeds the front end of the vehicle, which enhances its road tractor appearance.

For 2009, Dodge offers a new 4-door Double Cab that's shorter than the Ram's Mega Cab. It should make this full-size pickup even more competitive. In the US, half of all pickup trucks sold in 2006 were double-cab models, which Dodge had yet to offer.

In terms of powerplants, Dodge came up with a new and improved version of the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine. Featuring variable valve timing, this multi-displacement powerplant generates 380 horsepower (+35) and 404 lb-ft of torque (+29). According to the automaker, it burns 4 percent less fuel than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 of the 2008 Ram remain unchanged.

Thanks to a new multi-link solid rear axle with coil springs (an industry's first), the automaker is promising a much improved ride.

Dodge also innovates by introducing the new RamBox storage system for Crew Cab models. These two large lockable storage boxes are lit and airtight; they are integrated next to the fenders of the 5x7 cargo box. They offer a 243-liter total cargo capacity, which is enough to store up to 10 cases of 354-ml beer cans.

This system also includes various accessories allowing the owner to partition the cargo area, like built-in rails and adjustable metallic crossbars. There's even an arch-shaped aluminum bar to extend the cargo surface when the tailgate is folded down. Please note that these storage boxes reduce the width of the cargo bed to the interior of the fenders.

Canadians will be happy to know that, for the first time ever, a Dodge pickup truck will offer such options as a heated steering wheel and heated/cooled seats!

The 2009 Ram will arrive in showrooms at the end of the third quarter.
