The current model Honda Pilot seats up to 8 people and features an acclaimed car-like ride and handling combined with medium-duty off-road capability. It's automatic 4x4 system generates all weather traction to instill confidence in its owners- and the safe and reliable Pilot has won a spot on Car and Driver magazine's "5 Best Truck" awards for the past six years. It's all very sensible and down-to-earth stuff, and the machine looks the part. Not that Pilot isn't a good looking SUV, but it's devoid of any sort of excitement.

2009 Honda Pilot Prototype

Honda's answer to anyone who agrees was launched today in the form of a new prototype Pilot that builds off of the success of the current model. Honda says that some of the design cues on the concept model are intended to make it to the next production model too. The concept emphasizes intelligent interior packaging and advanced technology working together towards safety, fuel efficiency and convenience. This will be Honda's most exciting SUV yet.

Also on display were Honda's CR-Z and FCX Clarity concepts. Browsed by curious onlookers and avid environmentalists alike, these two concepts house everything Honda knows about alternative fuels- including a hydrogen drive system in the FCX and a hybrid powertrain in the CR-Z. CR-Z is a lightweight and eco-friendly sports-car concept, and the FCX is a bit more like a funny-looking 2008 Accord.

Interestingly, the FCX is set for some limited retail marketing in the USA this year. Powered by hydrogen that creates energy within an ultra-compact fuel-cell mounted between the seats, FCX can drive up to 270 miles while achieving mileage equivalent to about 70 miles per gallon!
