Miguel Molina (Audi A4) was quickest in the first practice session at Brands Hatch, Round 7 of the DTM championship.

The Spaniard, who drives a 2008-spec Audi A4, set his fastest lap in 42’’776 seconds (he set the lap record on this circuit in 41’’896 seconds in 2010). Molina leads the other young gun of the Audi squad, Edoardo Mortara, who set the second best performance in 42’’812 seconds.

2008-spec C Class Mercedes drivers Maro Engel (42’’862) and David Coulthard (42’’870) were 3rd and 4th, while the first factory (and heavier) car is the Audi A4 driven by Mike Rockenfeller with a lap in 42’’877. Ralf Schumacher who took 7th place in the session, was the best HWA Mercedes driver.

Championship leader Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) was only 12th, but only three tenths of a second slower than Molina. His championship rival Martin Tomczyk was even further back, in 15th place with a lap in 43’’154 seconds.

It is however difficult to draw a conclusion. The tight Brands Hatch layout (1.9km) makes if very challenging for drivers to get clear of traffic to set a good time. The smallest of mistakes can make a driver tumble down the order. Definitely something to watch for during Saturday's qualifying session.
