DeltaWing project caretakers All American Racers have finally revealed what engine powered their innovative concept: a Nissan 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine.

Also, Marino Franchitti and Michael Krumm are the two first drivers announced.

The DeltaWing is unlike any other race car. It's arrow-shape, narrow front tires and very laid back driving position makes it visually very distinctive.

However, the core of its originality lies in its objectives.

The DeltaWing wants to change the face of racing.

Concept originator Ben Bowlby wanted to create a car that was lighter and more effective aerodynamically that could be as fast as a conventional machine, while using less resources.

The objective of the lightweight DeltaWing is to achieve a level of performance between an LMP1 and LMP2 car with only 300 horsepower, almost half the power output of a LMP1 car. The target weight for the DeltaWing is 475kg, which compares with the 900kg minimum of LMP1 and LMP2 cars.

To power their forward-thinking project, All American Racers have called on the help of Nissan, a company, they felt, which could match their innovative thirst.

"This announcement gives Nissan the opportunity to become part of a ground-breaking motorsport project and one which could shape the future of the sport," said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

The four-pot engine features direct petrol injection and a turbocharger. Therefore, it has been labelled the DIG-T (Direction Injection Gasoline – Turbocharger), and should produce approximately 300 horsepower – enough to propel the car around a track as fast as an LMP1 prototype.

"Nissan has provided us with our first choice engine," said DeltaWing guru Bowlby.

"It’s a spectacular piece. We’ve got the engine of our dreams: it’s the right weight, has the right power and it’s phenomenally efficient."

It has also been announced that Marino Franchitti and Nissan's FIA GT1 world champion Michael Krumm would take the DeltaWing out for its first public appearance at Sebring, on March 15.
