After the opening three races of his return to formula one this year, Mercedes GP team chief executive Nick Fry has moved to defend seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport points out that the only other driver with a full 3-0 defeat in 2010 is the rookie Russian Vitaly Petrov.

The German daily Bild's latest headline is 'Der Schumi-Absturz' ('the fall of Schumi'), adding that 24-year-old German Rosberg is now Mercedes' "new number 1".

But the Brackley based team's chief executive Fry said Schumacher is working back up to full strength.

"Every race he is learning a little bit more and it is all coming together slowly but surely, which is probably what you would expect," the Briton is quoted as saying by the Press Association.

"I would not underestimate him," added Fry.

In other news, Schumacher’s spokeswoman said on Wednesday that the German champion wouold be a "silent member" of the F1 drivers' union GPDA.

From his Swiss office on Tuesday, the 41-year-old's day-to-day manager Sabine Kehm confirmed that the seven time world champion had reconsidered his earlier decision not to rejoin the Grand Prix Drivers' Association in 2010.

"Michael always supported the work of the GPDA, for many years as a director,” Sabine Kehm said.

“After he retired the work had been successfully taken over by the younger drivers, and at first Michael was hesitant to join as he did not want to be involved again.

"But after some thoughts and discussions, mainly with Felipe Massa, he reconsidered this initial decision and will now be a silent member," added Kehm.
