Red Bull Racing created a stir when it first ran its new 2015 Formula 1 car, the RB11, in camouflage livery and not the usual blue-and-silver colours.
Although it was the first time in F1 that a team ran its car with such a complex livery, it’s nothing new in the motorsport world and the automotive industry.
The idea to run the car in this eyecatching black and white camouflage design in testing is to hide the details.
Lionel Perkins, GM camouflage engineer, explains that such black and white patterns create a shadow that hides crucial vehicle design elements.
The following photos show that camouflage livery is commonly used in various racing series.
