Roberto Merhi set the best time in the first qualifying session of the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix.
But the Spaniard has been handed a ten-position penalty on the grid, which puts Marco Wittmann in first position on the grid.
Merhi was dominant during this first session, which was ran on a wet track. But immediatly after he set his best performance (1,6 seconds quicker than Marco Wittmann), the F3 Euroseries champion crashed hard into the back of Felix Rosenqvist’s car.
Merhi, who already handed a grid penalty of three positions after he was judged to have crossed the line at the pitlane exit, also get another penalty of seven positions of the grid for crashing into Rosenqvist.
Marco Wittmann inherits the pole ahead of Felipe Nasr before the second qualifying round held Friday.
