Striving for leadership in any given segment would seem to be the natural strategy for any automaker that doesn't compete solely on price, but Ford had to put processes in place, and make some priorities, to make sure segment leadership was possible.
One of the priorities is fuel economy. Ford stated that any new or substantially revised vehicle would be the leader, or among the leaders, in fuel efficiency.
2010 Product Highlights
Here now, is a quick overview of Ford's 2010 line-up, which the company calls, the freshest in its history. And we'll start low, and work our way up.
Ford Fiesta: We have to wait one more model year before Ford builds a North American-spec Fiesta for us at its plant in Mexico.
Ford Focus: The last year for this generation Focus, before it is replaced next year with a model similar to the current European edition.
Ford Fusion: It received a mid-cycle revision for 2010. A hybrid and performance model joins the mix. Engines and transmissions (everything 6-speed) are all new or updated. The 3.0-litre V6 is now Flex-Fuel (capable of running on E85).
Ford Taurus: Brand spanking new for 2010, and SHO model back in the fold, this time sporting an EcoBoost 3.5-litre V6. More premium than previous Taurus effort.
Ford Mustang: Substantial remake of the pony car, with new sheet metal and a higher quality interior. Engineers also addressed concerns about road and wind noise.
Ford Shelby GT500: besides the revamped Mustang skin, virtually untouched for 2010 and still very awesome.
Ford Transit Connect: Not new, but new to North America, Transit Connect is a small commercial van-like vehicle equipped with a 2.0-litre four driving the front wheels.
Ford Escape: The compact crossover continues to be available in regular and hybrid versions. Benefits from across the board changes to the I4 and V6 engines.
