The impressive collection of 120 cars that makes up the 2010 edition of Gumball 3000 sure embodies power and speed. With an orgy of Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, 911s and SLRs, it's no wonder crowds gather around these machines wherever they go. In this type of show, one needs a Bugatti Veyron or a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé to stand out. Maximillion Cooper himself was driving an aptly named Morgan Aero Max!
Even more impressive was a Baja-type buggy whose Californian owner must have been frustrated by OPP officers on the 401, what with a 1,400-horsepower engine under the hood. You think he had a blast when he finally arrived at the Shannonville Motorsport Park? Despite the remote location of this track, legions of enthusiasts were on hand to witness his high-speed stunts.
A rally for the rich and famous
The 2010 Gumball 3000 is bringing participants from London to New York through Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Boston, Quebec City and Toronto. This 7-day world tour costs no less than £30,000 (about $CA45,000). Miles of road during the day and hours of partying during the night -- at least that's what we see from the pictures on the website (www.gumball3000.com).
After all, Gumball 3000 is a lifestyle event. "'Gumball' rings with pop culture and sounds amusing," said Maximillion Cooper. As for the 3000, it's the total number of miles participants have to cover.
Of course, Gumball 3000 also recalls a classic American movie from the 1980s --"Cannonball Run." Some of the trophies awarded last year represented the film's lead actor. "It was a sort of tribute to Burt Reynolds, no more," argues Cooper. This year, participants will receive a specially-designed GP watch... probably to remember that time is the essence of Gumball 3000!
