Mercedes-Benz presents new BlueTEC diesel engine, revised M-Class and SL-Class in New York

The revised diesel powerplant from Mercedes-Benz features AdBlue injection, a technology that has been used in the company's trucks and buses for a while now. The engine produces less greenhouse-gas emissions and meets the Bin 5 standards applicable in North America. Three models will receive the BlueTEC: R320, ML320 and GL320.

The M-Class gets a mild reskin, with new bumpers as well as revised headlights and a new grille. Interior upgrades include new materials, a new steering wheel, a new voice-recognition system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two LCD screens. More safety features are part of the package, such as PRE-SAFE and NECK-PRO.

Mechanically, there are virtually no changes, but fuel economy is said to have been reduced. The ML63 AMG hot rod gets more-aggressive bodywork to show off its 503 horsepower output better.

The SL-Class also gets a not-so-extreme makeover. Like the ML, the SL gets revised styling and includes power bulges on the hood and air outlets on the front fenders to resemble the famed 1954 300SL. The SL55 AMG will be replaced by the SL63 AMG, and in certain markets, SL 280 and SL 350 trims will also be offered.

A new steering system will be available, enhancing the car's handling characteristics. Other modifications include suspension tweaking. Inside, the SL gets a new instrument panel and a new steering wheel, and materials have been upgraded as well. The COMAND navigation system benefits from additional functions, and the voice-recognition system is also updated.
