Volvo presents XC60 crossover at New York Auto Show

Recently introduced in Geneva, Volvo's new XC60 makes its North-American production-ready debut.

The XC60 is a five-door crossover that will battle the likes of the Lexus RX 350, the Infiniti EX35 and the Lincoln MKX. Volvo claims the premium small crossover segment will grow in 2009, and they want a fair portion of the market share.

Constantly innovating on the safety front, Volvo's new entry will feature what they call "City Safety". Sensors are mounted on the vehicle, and if an imminent collision is detected but the driver doesn't react, the system will apply the brakes by itself to help reduce the force of the impact, or avoid it altogether. Accoding to Volvo, this device makes the XC60 the safest vehicle the Swedish company has ever produced.

The Canadian-spec model will be powered by a turbocharged and intercooled, 3.0-liter inline-6, which develops 281 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive will be standard. The turbo six will also turn up in the 2009 XC70.

The XC60 will be built in Belgium, and Volvo is excepting to sell about 50,000 of them across the planet, and North America should get 40 percent of that number.

Look for the XC60 in Canada in early 2009. Pricing has not yet been announced.
