Highways in the Kenora-Rainy River area continue to be improved with the award of three major contracts by the province.
Part of the 2009-10 Northern Highways Program, these initiatives will improve the safety and efficiency of important roads in the region.
More than 18 kilometres of Highway 17 west of Dryden near Vermilion Bay will undergo reconstruction. Work includes road rehabilitation, construction of a new eastbound lane and rehabilitation of the Eagle River Bridge. Carillion Canada has been awarded the $13.8-million contract. Completion is scheduled for this September.
The Wabigoon River Bridge and the Buller Creek Bridge near Vermilion Bay will be reconstructed.
L.H. North Ltd. has been awarded the $8.3-million contract. Completion is scheduled for September 2010.
Almost 26 kilometres of Highway 71 west of Fort Frances will be rehabilitated. Work includes grading, drainage and paving. Pioneer Construction has been awarded the $2.8-million contract. Completion is scheduled for this September.
In 2009-2010, the Ontario government will invest $648 million in the Northern Highways Program for highway rehabilitation, expansion and safety improvements.
