Porsche presented the 918 Spyder in Geneva last year, a hybrid supercar well received by auto enthusiasts. The automaker is taking orders for the car as of today; production will be launched in 2013, and only 918 units will be built.

Sharing DNA with the Carrera GT, 917 and RS Spyder, the supercar’s design is still quite similar to that of the concept revealed over a year ago. The only notable difference is the Targa-style manual roof, featuring removable panels that can be stowed in the trunk.

The car is powered by a V8 engine generating over 500 hp, based on the RS Spyder’s mill and mated to a twin-clutch PDK transmission. Two electric engines (one on each axle) producing at least 218 hp together allow the car to benefit from all-wheel drive and to independently distribute power to the front and rear wheels.

Lastly, a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery keeps the electric engines running and can be recharged at any standard household outlet. The 918 Spyder has a range of over 25 km and can reach top speeds of 150 km/h in electric mode only.

Porsche estimates fuel consumption at 3 L / 100 km and CO2 emissions of only 70 g per km. Impressive numbers, considering the car can leap from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds en route to top speeds of 320 km/h.

But for $845,000, you’ll need quite the trust fund to get your hands on one of these babies. That’s probably why Porsche decided to offer buyers a special edition 911 Turbo S as well.

Again, only 918 will be built, in coupe or cabrio format and featuring superior leather trim, exclusive instruments and extra carbon appliqués inside and out. The serial number will also be inscribed on the glove box, the same number as the client’s 918 Spyder.

The coupe is available for 173,241 euros (239,787 CAD) and the cabrio for 184,546 euros (255,444 CAD). Deliveries will start in June 2011.
