Always spectacular and defying conventional logic, concepts and prototypes on display at most auto shows are the result of advanced engineering and design by companies looking to explore new trends and showcase their skills to the entire world.

In reality, these futuristic-looking machines often serve as a bold first step in vehicle development and innovation. In some cases, they foreshadow a brand’s upcoming production models. Two of the following concepts fit that description; as for the third one, think of it any way you want.

Cadillac Converj

Originally unveiled at the 2009 NAIAS in Detroit, the Cadillac Converj is a high-luxury interpretation of the Chevrolet Volt. The lines are definitely inspired from the Cadillac CTS Coupe, which also made its debut in L.A. Styling, however, takes a back seat to the acclaimed Voltec technology that transforms this Caddy into an extended-range electric vehicle, just like the Volt.

More specifically, the Converj uses an electric motor with a range of about 64 kilometres (40 miles). When the lithium-ion battery gets depleted, the 4-cylinder gasoline engine kicks in and, similar to a generator, it charges the battery in order to provide additional range.

Unlike the Volt, however, the Converj is a true Cadillac, with refined materials like genuine wood and leather as well as premium fit and finish, not to mention all the bells and whistles typically found in a luxury car.

For now, no production plans have been announced. But since GM has already invested in manufacturing facilities for the Volt and its battery systems, I would bet that a premium variant will also hit the market in the near future.
