Mr. Ehoodin points out that the tubular aluminum structure articulating the triple-layer canvas top barely adds 60 kilos to the car, thus maintaining its excellent weight distribution (49/51).

"Unlike many other convertibles, the roof of the GranTurismo Convertible is made up of not three but five sections, allowing for smaller-diameter roof tubing and therefore reduced weight," explains the Maserati rep.

Small tubing for a Maserati? My, could it be another Birdcage?

Focus on performance
This connection to the legendary, 50-year-old Maserati, which has haloed the Trident for decades, further illustrates how important performance is to the automaker.

"With Maserati, the line between stylish and sporty is pretty thin," claims Jeff Ehoodin, who adds that typical Maserati buyers expect nothing but ultra-high performance and exceptional driving dynamics.

That’s why he unhesitatingly compares the GranTurismo Convertible to the Bentley Continental GTC. "The Bentley is a natural competitor, although it fails to offer enough room for four adults despite similar dimensions. Plus, our cabriolet is more attractively priced," he goes on to say.

For the record, the Continental GTC carries a base MSRP of over $200,000.

Maserati brags about the fact they’ve created a real four-seater. "The rear seatback isn’t vertical like in some cabriolets. It features a 22-degree slant which makes the rear seats very comfortable," argues Ehoodin.
