Performance tests in winter conditions

During the fourth quarter of 2006, Mazda delivered five hydrogen-powered RX-8s to two Japanese prefectures, Yamaguchi and Hiroshima, as well as to the City of Hiroshima. Recently, the automaker joined forces with the regional development office of the Hokkaido prefecture to conduct performance tests in cold and winter conditions. These tests were held in Northern Japan, in Muroran and in the surroundings of Noboribetsu, from February 19 to 23, 2007. On the 21, the town of Muroran organized a symposium on the potential of hydrogen in transportation and its environmental benefits.

With these tests, Mazda wanted to show that its hydrogen RX-8 operates normally, even in tough weather conditions. Since hydrogen rotary engines are fairly inexpensive to build and can also run on regular fuel, there's a good chance they will play a major role in our quest for a greener society, while helping Mazda participate in shaping a world oriented toward the environment and based on the use of hydrogen.
