Italian web site Italiaracing.net claims that Japanese car manufacturer Subaru, who left the FIA World Rally Championship not long ago is set to return to the highest levels of motorsport in 2012.

The web site mentioned that Subaru has lodged an official entry in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for 2012 to race Imprezas.

Subaru has been seriously thinking about competing in the WTCC since 2008.

An agreement would have been struck with Belgium’s Kronos Racing (the private tam that ran the Citroen Xsara of Sebastien Loeb to a World Rally title a few years ago) with engines supplied by Cosworth.

Subaru and Cosworth confirmed that they would work together to develop a four-cylinder, turbocharged, 1.6-litre boxer engine.

Cosworth has already teamed up with Subaru to develop a limited edition 400bhp road car, the Cosworth Impreza STi CS400.
