2000 Honda Accord V6 - As Reliable as it is Enjoyable
Is the Honda Accord truly worthy of all its praise? Every time I turn around the midsize icon of Japanese engineering is getting another award or special recognition. Truthfully, it's not much to look at. It's not offensive or anything, but calling it bland might be doing it a service. So why all the honors?
If you can't make it on looks you better have a good personality, right? Fortunately the 'girl next door' Accord V6 is as pleasant as cars come. Its optional leather bucket driver's seat is comfortable, positioned directly in front of a well thought out instrument panel. The controls are intuitively placed, making getting acquainted easy. Especially appreciated are steering wheel mounted stereo switches, allowing me to keep my eyes on the road while tuning the radio.
The audio system itself, complete with a dash mounted CD player, is above average for a stock unit, with simple and intuitive operation. Convenient touches are everywhere, such as cup holders in the folding armrest for the rear passengers. The quality of materials is top-notch too, which goes hand in hand with the Accord's excellent fit and finish. Leg and headroom is not a problem either, as the Accord's roomy interior dimensions seem to contrast to its smallish exterior.
Turn on the V6 engine and try to feel a vibration. It's so quiet and refined that its easy to forget its running. While seeming tame, one step on the accelerator unleashes a different attitude. The 3.0-liter V6 catapults you forward from a standstill with authority. Passing on the freeway is equally impressive, as there's no need to hesitate before maneuvering around large highway trucks. That said, the V6 is hardly a 'racy' engine. Its power comes on smooth and effortless, getting the job done without drama. Don't get me wrong, an enthusiastic driver will thrill at the sound of the sweet V6 as it winds up to it's redline - yet it all happens with such control and grace that the rush that might come from the impending danger of pushing the envelope while engaging in an extreme sport, won't be part of your experience - you'll reach 60 mph (96.6 km/h) in about 7.5 seconds.
