2002 Infiniti Q45 - Quick + Quiet + Quality = New Q Quotient

There has never been any question as to the quality, refinement and reliability of Infiniti's flagship model, the Q45. Since its debut in 1990, it has remained near the top of the prestigious J.D. Power ratings. A year 2000 dependability study rated Infiniti third behind Lexus and Porsche. That's pretty lofty company, especially considering it placed ahead of Acura, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Just the same, sales have been anything but strong. Infiniti hopes to reverse this trend with the recent launch of its most aggressive offering yet. Aggressive in design, with a strong grille, wide stance and intimidating 7-lens Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, and aggressive in performance - try 340 horsepower!

Overtaking slow moving traffic is effortless. While the Q's 0 - 100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds is lightning fast, the entire process is without drama. A silky 5-speed automatic transmission with gated shifter and 'manumatic' mode, and Infiniti's Torque Demand system, which electronically smoothes shifts, makes acceleration seamless.

Without a side-by-side comparison it's difficult to tell if Infiniti has achieved its design goals of a better ride than the Lexus LS430 and better handling than BMW's 540i. The end result is impressive nonetheless. Overall it's fairly toss-able through curves while simultaneously isolating occupants from road imperfections. Its steering is surprisingly light while parking with the "weight" increasing commensurate with speed, allowing direct response to driver input with only a slight dead spot at center.
