Modern Day Classic

While the majority in attendance thought that Alfa Romeo was merely going to show a revised 156, 166 and GT Coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, the sporty Fiat subsidiary brought along a big surprise in the form of a brand new concept car.

Unlike previous showings such as the Kamal and Brera, the 8C Competizione takes a look back at Alfa's legendary presence in automotive racing, with breathtaking style and performance.

Set in a deep metallic red - a sparkling spin on Alfa's traditional racing color - the two door fastback is sleek and beautiful without resorting to attention-getting hood scoops, gaping vents or slats. The poised front end of the 8C sits low to the ground much like a '60s GT car. Oval headlight clusters, integrated into the car's tall front fenders, do not disturb the gentle yet muscular haunches flowing over the hood. A V-shaped bulge descends from the top ridge of the hood forward to the tip of the nose, where it plunges downward to form the surround for Alfa's legendary triangular grille.

Straddling the Alfa insignia, fog lamps are mounted in two narrow horizontal openings. The car's front end is reminiscent of Alfa's classic 33 Stradale Coupe concept, with vertical projection headlamps covered in clear plastic.
