2005 Pontiac Pursuit

While it might be understandable to describe the unique-to-Canada Pontiac Pursuit as the replacement for the Pontiac Sunfire, it would be mistake for a couple of important reasons.

First off, it's no longer an entry-level model; with the introduction of the Korean-built Wave, Pontiac was able to move the Pursuit into a ''premium compact'' position, first as a sedan at the end of 2004 and then as a coupe in 2005. That means it will be more expensive than the Sunfire.

More importantly, the Pursuit will also be considerably more accomplished than Sunfire, since it uses GM's new Delta architecture and that is a vast improvement on that departing model's aging chassis.

The Delta architecture is also used on the Chevrolet Cobalt (which is similarly not a replacement for the Cavalier), but in many ways it suits the Pontiac personality better since its superior dynamic ability allows Pursuit to better realize its ''Built For Drivers'' promotional pitch.

In GM of Canada's view, the Pursuit will be ''the epitome of Pontiac'' and will bring a ''new level of small car refinement, quality and performance to the market.''

According to Richard James of GM of Canada public relations, the Pursuit will feature ''a clean, contemporary design, spacious interior and excellent dynamic performance.''

James says ''the smooth clean lines create a fresh and upscale exterior, while maintaining a sporty appearance with the traditional Pontiac styling cues including the vented front fascia with twin-port grille, cat's-eye headlights, and Pontiac badging. The finishing touch is the standard 15-inch and available 16-inch wheels.''

If the basic sporty nature of the four-door model isn't enough, James suggests, then there'll be a GT model with ''a more aggressive appearance with side rocker moldings, longer front fascia and standard 17-inch wheels.''

While Pursuit's ''cockpit is built for drivers,'' James says, the interior execution involves ''more refinement and a higher quality of materials than one expects in a small car.''
