Despite the growth of minivans and then crossovers, the traditional family wagon is not dead. One only has to look at Subaru and their Legacy Wagon, a versatile car with a 1,750-litre maximum cargo capacity. The cargo area is actually well thought out; there's even a molded tray that protects the cargo mats. And the Legacy's rear hatch, which is better than the side-opening tailgates found on some SUVs, keeps protecting against the elements when you open it.

The Legacy Wagon is an interesting alternative for those who seek a versatile vehicle.

Sportier styling
While previous Legacys suffered from a rather bland design, the result is much more attractive this time around. Overall better-looking, the car's styling is fresher and more dynamic. I was pleasantly surprised to hear SUV owners make positive comments about the Legacy, especially since these drivers usually hate family wagons ("not sporty enough"). Except for the delivery truck inspired backup taillights, this Subaru appealed to most people we have talked to throughout our road test.

Small up front, large out back
The interior is generously roomy for rear passengers, particularly their legs. The bench seat is very comfortable and can accommodate three adults. However, Subaru seems to have neglected the front occupants, who feel kind of squeezed. Even when sliding the seat all the way back, the average driver (slightly less than six-foot tall) will long for more legroom. The dashboard drops rather low and may impede the use of the pedals. This could prove to be a huge problem when wearing big winter boots. Also, the front seats, while nicely sculpted, are a bit too firm and not comfortable enough. As for the adjustable lumbar support, you can choose between "a lot" and "too much". The controls are well laid out and the fit and finish is refined.

The Legacy can swallow up to 1,750 litres of cargo.
