Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Life is filled with exaggeration. And when we notice several exaggerations on the same car, we start getting nasty against those who drive it. However, if that car goes down the road unnoticed, I think its driver will be spared.

Audi's S6 has more than one exaggeration: its price ($101,900) and its power quotient (435 horsepower). But this car is so subtle that hardly anyone notices it. That's a good thing, for me at least.

It only attracts the enthusiast's eye.

Conservative looks

Besides a couple of 'S6' badges and 'V10' insignias on the front fenders, there isn't much to distinguish this rocket from normal A6 sedans. And since the latter has not-too-exuberant exterior styling, we can consider the S6 to be one of the fastest sports cars on the market; the ultimate sleeper.

You see, by choosing a color that's less flashy than red for our S6, like black or grey, we can potentially drive fast without getting noticed. Try that in a Porsche or a Ferrari, and you'll have cops on your posterior in no time.

There are wealthy people that want to be seen behind the wheel of their high-priced possession. Others don't. Anyway, if I was rich, I wouldn't. And I think the S6 represents the true German sport sedan. During the test, I saw no heads turning to watch me pass by, and no one stopped to ask questions about the car.

Personally, I like the looks of this sedan, but it probably won't become a classic, a car that we'll remember 20 years from now and say: "Yes, son, that 2007 S6 sure was a beauty."

Gallardo-derived engine
In 20 years, we might rather be saying: "Yes, son, that 2007 S6 had a heck of an engine!" And it does. Based on the little Lamborghini's V10, this 5.2-liter mill produces 435 horses and 398 lb-ft of torque. It also produces a particular soundtrack, one that quickly becomes addictive. Married to a 6-speed Tiptronic gearbox with wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the car is a blast to drive. 0 to 100 km/h accelerations take about 5.5 seconds.

This impressive engine is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10.
