Have you ever watched the movie Dodging the Clock? In one particular scene, a father reluctantly agrees to buy a family minivan instead of a sports car, but he opts for the leather-wrapped steering wheel just to get a bit of sporty feel.

Year after year, the Odyssey manages to stay on top.

That's exactly how I felt during my time behind the wheel of the 2008 Honda Odyssey. I know minivans in general have their qualities and attractive features, but let's be real: they're far from being a prime example of sportiness, especially in terms of shape and style.

Still, you should never judge a book by its cover...

Not sporty but...
After a quick glance at the spec sheet, the thing that struck me the most about the Honda Odyssey is the output. The 247-hp 3.5L V6 is one of the most potent engines in its class.

Even more impressive than horsepower, though, is the amount of torque available, especially at low revs. Thus, as soon as you grip the leather-wrapped steering wheel (that's right) and you dip the throttle, the vehicle moves forward with surprising ease, mixing takeoffs, accelerations and passing maneuvers with no hesitation.

On the other hand, I did not warm up to the steering. As is often the case with Honda products, the Odyssey is overly assisted, resulting in a complete lack of road feedback. Sure, you don't drive a minivan like a sports car, but there are handling and responsiveness standards that every automaker should meet.

On the plus side, fuel consumption is barely over 10 L/100 km, while the smooth suspension makes every trip comfortable for all passengers, no matter where they're sitting.
