Suzuki has a history of producing small all-wheel drive cars. In fact, their success in European endurance rallies is a testament to all the expertise they've gained over the years. However, very few of the brand's capable machines have found their way to the Canadian market as production models. Sure, there were a couple of decent SUVs and other worthy products, but sadly, Suzuki had never offered a vehicle like the SX4 before.
Today, the automaker is sort of making amends with the introduction of the little SX4 hatchback. This one-of-a-kind model is a brilliant alternative to all four-wheel vehicles designed for cold-weather countries like ours. With a competent AWD system, it can go just about anywhere, even during light off-road forays.
The exterior design of the 2009 Suzuki SX4 is truly unique. Barely 4-meter long and 1.5-meter tall, the car is quite short and looks squat. From an aesthetic point of view, I find it well executed and, quite frankly, very cute. Build quality is not the highest but it's still commendable.
The hood is extremely short and the windshield is humongous, which allows a clear view of the road ahead. Engineers also had the clever idea to integrate a protective plastic trim around the wheel arches and along the rocker panels. The obvious benefit is greater durability against road hazards. Of course, there's a small badge to remind drivers that the SX4 is ready to venture off the beaten path.
Inside, the overall layout is pleasant to look at, particularly with brushed aluminum-looking inserts outlining the prominent center console. Locating the various controls and instruments is almost intuitive. The steering wheel is small, making it a joy to grip and manipulate. It even features a convenient set of audio controls.
