The 2023 Z4 M40i continues the tradition of elegant roadsters from BMW. Personally, I find this model embodies a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts of sporty and refined driving. It also turns both older and younger heads.
2023 BMW Z4: What’s new
In 2023, BMW includes the M Sport package as standard on the sDrive30i model, equipped with a 4-cylinder engine. This package enhances performance with an M Sport suspension, optimizing the vehicle's maneuverability. Aesthetically, it elevates the car's appearance with distinctive aerodynamic elements and an M Sport steering wheel.
New 19-inch wheels are now available, characterized by a matte black finish and polished edges.
The 2023 Z4 also stands out with the introduction of three new body colours: Thundernight Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic.
Unlike its cousin, the Toyota Supra, which added a 6-speed manual to its lineup this year, the BMW Z4 continues to be available only with a automatic transmission.

The exterior design of the 2023 Z4 is simply unique, with classic sports car proportions. Its long hood and aggressive front end are proven attention grabbers. Moreover, BMW offers a rich colour palette that adds to its appeal.
Inside, the combination of leather and Alcantara creates a luxurious atmosphere that I find immensely pleasing. The sport seats are not only aesthetic but also incredibly comfortable and functional. Once you manage to get into them. For taller individuals, the seat height is very low, so you don't slide behind the steering wheel of the Z4, you drop into the car, whilst minding your head.
Technology in the 2023 BMW Z4 M40i
The 2023 BMW Z4 integrates an advanced and proven infotainment system. Although it takes a bit of time to master all of the features, the voice controls are effective and intuitive. The system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, is a major asset, and while it has only one USB port, that’s compensated by an optional wireless charging pad.
The audio quality is decent even with the top down. During phone calls, your conversation partners will have no trouble hearing you, even with the convertible top lowered.
In terms of driving assistance, the adaptive cruise control, especially in heavy traffic, is one of my favourites. It removes all the stress that driving in rush hour traffic jams can cause.
However, there's a slight reservation about the lane-centering system, which can be overly intrusive in its corrections. It sometimes feels like you're fighting against the system, which constantly tries to correct the vehicle's trajectory. Over time, it becomes tiring.
Driving the 2023 BMW Z4 M40i
Driving this car is a near-euphoric experience. The car responds with agility and precision, making every journey exciting. The adaptive M Sport suspension and M Sport brakes further enrich this experience, making drives exhilarating while maintaining safety. It's been one of my summer 2023 favourites alongside the new Nissan Z. Both cars are true toys and evoke a lot of emotions.
Versions of the 2023 BMW Z4
Between the M40i and the sDrive30i, my heart is torn. The M40i offers undeniable power and luxury, but the sDrive30i also has its charms, especially for those looking for a more accessible roadster that comes with its share of adrenaline.
Best value?
For me, the M40i represents the best compromise between quality and price. It offers exceptional performance and luxury without being prohibitively expensive. However, the sDrive30i version is a more economical option that also deserves consideration.
Competitors of the 2023 BMW Z4 M40i
The Z4 M40i faces tough competitors, not least the Porsche 718 Boxster, Audi TT and Nissan Z. Each has its strengths, but the Z4 stands out for its balance between performance and comfort, not to mention the intoxicating sound of the M40i.
