Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. has just announced the 1-millionth hybrid sale today. More than half of all of the hybrids sold worldwide have been sold in the United States; 541,210 vehicles since 2000 through April 2007.
Thanks to the ever-increasing gas prices, Toyota predicts that it will deliver 250,000 units in the US in 2007 alone. Between January and April, Toyota and Lexus have sold 119,154 hybrids, a 75% increase over 2006. May 2007 posted a huge 102% gain in sales over the same period last year with 36,101 purchases.
Other than saving gas, hybrid owners are mindful of tailpipe emissions as well as the reduction in foreign oil dependence. A recent study conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has found that hybrids have saved nearly 215 million gallons, or 5.1 million barrels, of fuel in the U.S. since 1999. Toyota has sold 66% of all hybrids that are on the road in America since that year.
According to Toyota, global sales of hybrid vehicles have greatly contributed to reductions in CO2 emissions. In their estimation, nearly 3.5 million fewer tons of CO2 have been emitted since 1997.
