Beneath the 'bonnet' a torque happy 165-hp 4-cylinder boxer (horizontally-opposed) is the only engine choice while all four wheels are driven via either a standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine is legendarily reliable and relatively fuel efficient, resulting in 11.0 L/100 km city and 7.9 L/100 km hwy, as per 2002 specifications. Stepping a couple of years back, model year 2000 brought the first upgrade to the engine, specifically increasing its torque to 166 lb-ft, especially benefiting automatic equipped vehicles. A limited slip rear differential was also added to 'S' and 'Limited' models.

Initially the Forester was available in 'L' and 'S' trim levels, signifying base and luxury appointments respectively. The dash was also fairly well laid out if not inspired, with a handy covered bin on top. In 1999 a 'Limited' edition offered faux wood trim and leather trim to dress up the interior.

Problems? The only major one to date involved 221,987 1998 through 1999 models made between April of 1997 and March of 1999. Basically, in extremely cold conditions, the seals on the brake master cylinder could fail and increase stopping distances - not good. What is good is that most cars affected should have had their master cylinders replaced under warranty.

On a positive note, all Foresters received second-generation, de-powered airbags. Also, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 1999 - 2002 Forester, stiffened beyond the 1998 model, gets a 'G' (for good) overall rating. BTW, 'Good' is their top score. Out of seven total categories, it rates good for five, and acceptable (the next lowest rating) for only two. That should be comforting news to Forester owners or would-be buyers.
