The Sonata's rear taillamps and upscale appliqué sets it apart from most competitive midsize sedans. Its truly an attractive car from any angle.

The 1999 model year saw an updated 149-hp 2.4-L 4-cylinder engine with 16-valves, dual-overhead cams and a resultant 156 lb-ft of torque at its disposal. While more powerful than the standard engine it replaced, it was still a little noisy even when new. The optional 170-hp 2.5-L V6's 166 lb-ft of torque doesn't reach its peak until 4,000 rpm, which might not be zippy enough for some drivers. Another thing to factor in is Hyundai's overstated horsepower ratings that made the headlines last September, averaging at 4.6-hp less than originally quoted. While this won't matter all but speed enthusiasts it's a good idea to keep in mind that the 170-hp V6 is probably not 170-hp - 4-cylinder engine horsepower ratings were also overstated.

Nevertheless both engines provide smooth operation due to their sophisticated multi-valve heads and DOHC architecture. Also the 4-speed automatic transmission shifts down quickly and provides smooth upshifts. A 5-speed manual came standard. All engine and transmission combinations were available to both GL and GLS models.

Structural rigidity was up for 1999, reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels and improving handling. Hyundai's engineers used a supercomputer analysis, allowing them to develop a more rigid, stronger frame without additional body weight. The result? Its double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension setup gives the Sonata decent poise when the road starts to wind and commendable stability at highway speeds.
