For a German engineered, upper-scale premium sedan or hatchback, it doesn't get much more affordable than Volkswagens Jetta and Golf lineup. In addition to a great looking, great driving and safe package, the Jetta and Golf hit the market with a key ingredient for success- selection.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta

From a sensible little four cylinder engine to a high-output V6 or even a miserly diesel powered model, the Jetta and Golf had something for everyone. The model lineup included the GL, GLS and GLX for Jetta, with the Golf's top-line model instead called the GTI. GL and GLS came with a 115 horsepower four-cylinder engine or optional turbocharged TDI diesel powerplant for exceptional mileage and bullet-proof operation. There was even a Jetta Wagon model introduced in 2001.

Performance buffs can search for a used example with a 1.8 liter, 150 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 174 horsepower 'VR6' V6 with 2.8 litres displacement and plenty of torque for an exciting driving experience. Both of the higher performance engines were bumped in horsepower in 2002- with the turbo-four making 180 horsepower, and the VR6 a tidy 200.

A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic were offered on all models except the GTI or GLX- though you may find a smoother five-speed automatic or six-speed manual depending on which year you're considering.

A special-edition Wolfsburg model was also available in 2003, with added features. Similarly, a 20th anniversary edition GTI was offered with performance upgrades and special trim. You can also expect to find features like a Monsoon stereo system, heated leather seating and a sunroof.

In a nutshell, selection won't be a problem- but living with the car might be. Volkswagen's reputation for quality may have been tarnished by early versions of their new Jetta, and accordingly, you should avoid the early years of production.
