Insight was delivered in one basic configuration--a compact two-seat, three-door hatchback. Trim levels were dictated primarily by the selected transmission and presence of air conditioning--and you'll find power accessories, adjustable steering and remote access on board. Antilock brakes, a CD changer and dual front airbags were also fitted--depending on which year and which side of the border you shop from.
Common problems seem few, far between and largely not centered around the hybrid hardware itself. Gripes include the audio system, which can pick up interference when the rear wiper is turned on. This is remedied with a revised wiring harness. The hood release could become flimsy or broken, and the air conditioner may suffer from a collapsed hose which could result in poor performance.
As with any used car, a full check of the Insight's features and functions is advised on a test drive.
Any former owner could have missed an oil change or tune up, but chances are that a used Hybrid hasn't had a 'tough' life or been subjected to much abusive driving. Their very nature generally attracts a driver who isn't in a hurry, and one that's willing to be gentle and patient in order to maximize their mileage.
Engine problems centre around a check engine light related to a failed solenoid, and a cold start problem that's remedied by a reprogramming of the ECU. If you buy an Insight from a warmer locale than yours, this is more likely to become an issue--though it's easily fixed. Note that several automotive publications performing long-term tests were impressed with the Insight's uneventful surprise repair record.
Owners commonly report that squeaks and rattles are the primary complaint as their car ages, and that a fussy clutch-pedal sensor can prevent proper functioning of the 'idle-stop' system. Recalls were minimal, dealing only with a headlight wiring harness and an airbag module.
And now, for the skeptics. With very low overall sales volumes, reliability information on the Insight may be still be somewhat inconclusive. It appears a tremendously safe bet, though some may want to keep an eye on used hybrids for a few more years before making a decision. If that's the case, consider an Accent or Echo in the meantime.
