As much fun as cruising in the city can be, the Hummer really shines when off the pavement. There is nothing this beast can't do, nor is there anywhere it won't take you. The huge machine climbs up and over large rocks without even hinting that it might scrape bottom. If ever it does, massive skid plates protect its undercarriage. Contrary to what most people assume, the Hummer has a smooth forgiving ride both on and off the road. Its sheer width might be its only drawback, as squeezing the big behemoth through a few narrow passages of trees or the confines of a garage can be a challenge.

With this years model, AM General has set out to make yet more improvements. New pad material has been added to its Meritor-WABCO hydraulic anti-lock braking system, doubling the life of the brakes. As well, the Detroit diesel's glow plugs are now monitored by the Onboard Diagnostic System (OBDII) - with glow plug malfunctions triggering the 'Check Engine' light on the dashboard. The speedometer has been redesigned too, including a digital LCD odometer with a trip odometer.

The new optional Monsoon audio system should help to drown out the diesel, pumping out tunes with premium clarity. The system now features a weather band that receives national weather service broadcasts on any of seven channels - a valuable advantage when in remote areas. The stereo is also customized for the Hummer's unique interior. Six coaxial speakers, pedestal-mounted tweeters and a separate subwoofer enclosure add to the systems superior sound quality. Rear-seat audio allows passengers in the back seats to control their own tunes through a separate component located on the back of the rear-seat console. With headphones, separate volume controls allow for simultaneous audio functions. For example, the radio may be playing over the speakers, while the rear passengers listen to a CD over the headphones. This is perfect if you're getting tired of Elmo Goes to Disneyland.
