Together with these major revamps, there are many smaller improvements. Now the rearview mirror incorporates an auto-dimming feature. New removable rear-seat cup holders are also available. Also, rear windows are dark tinted to enhance the appearance and improve air-conditioning performance.

The 2000 Hummer offers new wheel and tire options as well. The standard two-piece steel wheels utilize hex nuts for attaching wheel halves and accept a rubber runflat tire with dual beadlock for improved low-pressure operation and consistent balancing. Factory-installed OEM 16.5-inch one-piece aluminum wheels are also optional. As well, 17-inch two-piece aluminum wheels with beadlock and runflat on 17" GS-A tires will be offered soon. The 17" Goodyear MT/R tires are optional with more aggressive tread than the current GS-A tires and improved sidewall puncture-resistant protection.

The traction control system introduced last year has proved to be a staple for off-road handling. This system, called TorqTrac 4 or TT4, simplifies Hummer operation by automatically engaging when it senses a wheel slipping. "TorqTrac 4 takes the guesswork out of the process," said Bill Thompson. "Most 4 x 4's off-road success is due to a combination of 50 percent machine and 50 percent driver ability. Thanks to the TT4 system, the Hummer's off-road superiority is attributed 90 percent to the machine and 10 percent to the driver."

TT4 utilizes an electronic sensor on each of the four wheels to assess when a wheel is spinning. The sensors transmit a signal to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which then determines how to regulate the brake pressure. If a wheel's speed is greater than the vehicle speed, the ECU applies the brakes to that wheel, engaging the traction control system and transferring the torque to the wheels with traction. If the ECU senses the brake is locked, it engages the ABS. The Meritor-WABCO hydraulic anti-lock braking system is a four-channel add-on unit with an electronic wheel speed monitoring and control system used on medium-duty trucks, buses and motor home chassis. Mate this with Hummer's geared hub assembly, which provides a gear reduction of nearly 2:1 (doubling the torque to the wheel where you need it most), and there isn't much terrain that the Hummer can't negotiate.
