When it launched Jaguar's press materials further stated that it would make "you forget about the BMW Z8." Bold words for sure, but the buzz it created on the auto show circuit in 2000 that continued right through to its 2001 production announcement and still reverberates to this day, makes it worthy of the claim. At least at an expected $50,000 to $65,000 price it was to be reasonably affordable, something the BMW can not attest to.
During its initial 2000 Detroit launch Jaguar's Managing Director, Jonathan Browning stated, "The F-Type concept is a clear signal of Jaguar's intent to return to the true sports car market in which we were so successful in the 1950s and 60s." Well we're still waiting Jaguar, and by all accounts and purposes still willing.
My reasonably educated guess is that automotive enthusiasts the world over would be more than happy if Jaguar were to get its act together and build something that comes close to resembling the F-Type roadster, thrilled enough even to pony up the necessary price of entry providing its kept to reasonable levels. The British brand could definitely use a halo car in this price category, or in other words a halo car that could be capable of a reasonably strong business case, while attracting a younger, wider customer base, something the X-Type has been challenged to accomplish. So what have you got to say for yourself Jaguar?
