V70 / XC70 great to drive- but be aware of service history
Volvo's conservative styling and luxury earned their products a loyal following- though unquestioned safety was also responsible in parking their machines in driveways across the country. Safety is serious business for the Swedes, and a Volvo wagon's always been a sure way to get the wife and kids around in complete and total safety.

The second-generation V70 existed in the 2001 to 2007 model year range, and it capitalized on a styling refresh to do away with Volvo's trademark boxy look. The rounded front end, gentler grille, more curvaceous body and chiseled lines meant that V70 still looked very much like a Volvo, but a more modern and updated one.

You'll find the V70 available with a selection of unique five cylinder engines that are known for their smoothness and refinement. Starting the V70 range is a 2.4 liter unit with 168 horsepower, though a turbocharged variant was available with 197 horsepower. A top-line "T5" model used a slightly downsized but powered-up version of the turbo engine, developing a generous 247 horsepower.

In addition to a wide selection of engine options, the V70 was available with automatic or manual transmissions, depending on the particular model in question. All wheel drive was available too, as was a beefed-up XC70 model intended for more comfortable use on less travelled roadways. The V70, XC70 and even the S60 sedan all shared the same hardware under their different skins.

A slightly more powerful 2.5 liter turbo five cylinder engine joined the V70 AWD and XC70 models later in their life cycle.

Inside, look for a flexible, handy and clever interior. Rear seats fold flat as needed to open up a nearly cavernous storage area, and there are plenty of compartments for smaller items up front. Dealer and aftermarket accessories are available to help with cargo organization, too.

Chances are you'll find the V70 a pleasure to drive. It's known for a solid, quiet ride and well bolted-down sense of security. It feels the part of a premium brand on the road- a proposition that's furthered by features like dual zone climate control, keyless entry, a sunroof, telescopic and tilt steering and heated leather seats.
