2001 Hyundai HCD6 Concept - Rethinking the Roadster
Compared to some of my well-seasoned colleagues I haven't been in the automotive journalism business for long. Just the same, after experiencing some of the major international auto shows such as Detroit and New York, I've become a little spoiled. My local car show, once the big event of the year, is now unfortunately more of a 'been there seen that' affair.
But thanks to Hyundai, a little surprise lay in store. The HCD6, initially shown in Chicago two years ago, is still an intriguing prospect. It's almost exotic, especially considering its mid-engine configuration, but its 2002 Sonata derived 2.7-L V6 brings it down to earth in what could be a very affordable way if produced.
Designed at Hyundai's California Design studio in Fountain Valley, the two-seat roadster shows a different face for the Korean automaker. Most immediately noticeable, distinct "detached, floating" carbon fiber bumpers, front and rear, offer a dramatically bold statement of style. More traditional round fog lamps and back up lights are integrated into each bumper, adding real world function while softening the visual impact.
