I'm always impressed with the quality of materials, high level of fit and finish and full array of features available in Volkswagen products. Like all VWs the Passat is well equipped, including a premium cassette audio system (dealer-installed CD optional), height and telescoping steering wheel, heated remote power mirrors, power windows, central remote locking, air conditioning, cruise control and the ultimate conversation piece, a "switchblade" key. Since we're talking about the Passat's cool factor, at night a soft red glow of ethereal backlit switches adds warmth and functionality to the cabin. The gauges contrast in a stunning electric blue.
The option list adds a power glass sunroof, rear sunshade, alloy wheels, leather seats and door panels, the sensational Monsoon audio system with audio (and cruise) controls on the steering wheel, plus a cold weather package with heated windshield washer nozzles and 5-way heated front seats. Your seat temperature can be set to reflect whatever inclement weather conditions you face, with position 5 warm enough to remedy lower back pain.
Speaking of cold, harsh winters, VW's optional 4-Motion all-wheel drive might be a wise choice. Other standard safety features include halogen headlamps, integrated foglamps, four-disc ABS brakes, traction control and dual front air bags. A side-impact safety system called Side Curtain Protection is optional.
Now that European manufacturers are finally bending toward eclectic North American values, the new Passat incorporates cupholders that actually hold drinks. Two of these very functional units can be found in the center console and another two within the rear armrest. Driver and passenger room is expansive, with what might be the best rear leg and headroom in the mid-size segment. The large trunk can fit 15 cu. ft. of cargo, but if that's not enough you can order your Passat as a sport wagon.
