First-gen Cayenne loved for driving dynamics and performance
If you’re considering the mighty Cayenne Turbo or Turbo S, be sure to inspect the ‘charge pipes’ coming from the turbochargers for signs of oil leakage. This problem doesn’t necessarily mean the turbocharger has gone bad, but it could be an indication of trouble. Avoid a model that smokes during start-up, warm idle or acceleration, too. Don’t assume the seller isn’t trying to sell you a model that’s about to cough up two turbochargers, as replacement costs for these will run well into the thousands. A pre-purchase dealer inspection of a used Cayenne Turbo / Turbo S should be considered mandatory.

Other standard SUV checks apply, too. Have the Cayenne you’re considering inspected thoroughly by a mechanic familiar with the model for signs of excessive tire or brake wear, excessive rust, dents or holes in the underbody, and leaks at the engine, transmission, differentials or transfer case. A scan of the on-board computer can identify whether or not any hidden codes have been stored, too.

Obviously, the Porsche Cayenne won’t be the least expensive SUV model on the used premium SUV market to buy, insure, fuel or maintain. According to its owners, the added costs are typically outweighed by the model’s prestige, driving dynamics and performance-- though shoppers after a used model that’s easy on the wallet may wish to look elsewhere.

Used Porsches are sought-after for many things, but low maintenance and purchase costs aren’t typically among them. If you’re going the Cayenne route, shop carefully, protect yourself with extended warranty coverage where available, and patiently search out the model that’s perfect for your needs.
