"The Cheyenne embodies all that is instantly Chevrolet - pure, honest forms, innovative functionality and spirited performance," added Welburn.

Although unlikely to ever see production, we can all dream about the 500-hp and 580 lb-ft of torque that results from the supercharged 6.0-L Vortec V8. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press)

That performance contingent includes a supercharged 6.0-L Vortec V8, resulting in 500-hp and 580 lb-ft of torque. Unless Chevy decides to turn its slick new SS into an SVT Lightning beater, don't expect this blown engine even as optional equipment. Still it's fun to dream. What will be part of the future pickup is GM's displacement on demand technology (DOD), expected to debut next year. DOD turns off 50 percent of the cylinders unless laboring under heavy loads or at full acceleration, dramatically reducing fuel consumption, which directly improves emissions.

While both its looks and performance could easily entice the uninitiated to opt for a pickup, the concept's innovative functionality is its trump card. Chevy equips the four-door pickup with two additional doors on each side of its cargo box, complete with convenient stairs making the long jump from bumper to tailgate a thing of the past. Don't be surprised if this feature shows up on the next generation Silverado, or for that matter every other competitive truck on the market. It could be the pickup equivalent to double sliding doors on minivans.

As functional as the cargo box side doors are they can't and don't replace the Cheyenne's tailgate. Instead the new concept sports a regular old tailgate, other than the added twist of its ability to open halfway to make a handy work shelf. Various storage compartments are located under the box floor and convenient drawers can be found in the box sides, plus the usual tie down hooks and cargo area lighting.
