Innovative safety features help new models stand out above the competition, and the Model U takes this to new heights. The goal by Ford's engineers was to enhance the driver's natural talents and supplement them with the vehicle's ability to recognize a potential driving risk. Enhanced front lighting and active night vision with adaptive capabilities, an example of a smart computer system, enhances what can be seen naturally. It also incorporates pre-crash sensing via a stereo camera system, while cameras in the side mirrors help drivers see around large vehicles. Much of this information is relayed to a monitor mounted in the center of the front dash area. I wonder if the visionaries of screen and television inspired the realization of these features. Star Trek anyone?

But the most exciting, and futuristic aspect of this particular prototype, in my humble opinion, is its hydrogen internal combustion engine. Based on Ford's global 2.3-liter gasoline powered I-4, when optimized for hydrogen fuel it results in zero emissions and up to 25 percent more fuel-efficiency. Much like a diesel engine, the hydrogen ICE runs unthrottled while under way.

To make matters even more fascinating, the engine is joined with an advanced hybrid electric transmission. The torque converter from a conventional transmission is replaced with a high-voltage electric motor and two hydraulic clutches that permit the motor to operate independently of, or in concert with the engine.
