Saturn Voluntarily Recalls VUE for Suspension Issue

Automaker to Replace Some Suspension Parts to Address Test Results

DETROIT - Saturn is issuing a voluntary customer satisfaction recall for Saturn VUE sport utility vehicles from model years 2002 through 2004. The recall will affect 246,433 vehicles, including 231,123 in the U.S. and 15,310 in Canada.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently introduced a new dynamic stability test commonly referred to as the "fishhook maneuver." While the VUE did not roll over during the test, the rear suspension sustained damage when a wheel contacted the pavement, preventing the vehicle from completing the test. Saturn is making the necessary adjustments to strengthen the VUE's suspension system.

"Saturn is dedicated to our brand promise of a positive ownership experience," said Jill Lajdziak, general manager. "Once we learned that the VUE did not complete the new test, we acted quickly to institute a change on the production line, and to voluntarily recall all previously sold VUEs to ensure a high degree of confidence in the performance of this popular vehicle."

Saturn retailers across the United States and Canada began calling VUE owners late Wednesday to alert them to the recall. VUE owners will be formally notified by a letter that outlines details of the voluntary recall program. They will then be advised when to bring their vehicles to a Saturn retailer so that the modifications can be made, free of charge.

In addition, Saturn retailers will conduct consumer education clinics for VUE owners that will explain the test and how the suspension modification will help the VUE complete the NHTSA evaluation.

The VUE has a proven record of strong performance in NHTSA crash testing, earning a five-star rating in both the government's frontal and side impact tests. In addition, the VUE meets or exceeds all federal motor vehicle safety standards.
