"Some people might think it strange that we're making so many improvements so soon after introducing the all-new, third-generation Q45," stated Ian Forsyth, Infiniti Division's director of product planning. "But, while we're in the process of totally invigorating the Infiniti lineup -- adding new vehicles like the G35 sport sedan and sport coupe and the M45 performance sedan -- we feel it's appropriate that our flagship Q45, which started the product revival, should keep pace with continued improvements every year. The Q45 will always be the most powerful expression of the very best Infiniti has to offer."

All models receive a modified final drive ratio that really improves the Q's sporting feel off the line, making better use of its velvety smooth 32-valve, DOHC V8. The engine makes a no-excuses 340-hp, ample for thrilling acceleration that is no doubt aided by the car's reasonably lightweight - for a full-size luxury car - 1,744 kg (3,845 lb) curb weight. The engine revs smoothly to 6,700 rpm, not particularly necessary as maximum horsepower arrives at 6,400 rpm and torque apexes from as low as 4,000 rpm, but it's just such fun to wind it up to the very top and hear the valvetrain whir and exhaust note growl that comes with it.

While speed ramps up quickly, the Q45's 5-speed automatic transmission shifts without commotion, one flawless increment after another whether gliding through town or wringing it through the gears on a winding mountain pass. Part of its smooth operation is due to Infiniti's Electronic Torque-Demand Powertrain Control system that keeps tabs on engine power, throttle position, and transmission gear selections for added refinement and performance. The latter scenario is aided by an extremely slick manual shift mode.
