I didn't have the opportunity to test the 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission but previous experience tells me it is excellent. Still, as good as it is I enjoy a manual shifter so much more, especially the dreamy duo Porsche serves up. Both 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions are extremely rewarding to row through the gears, with short throws, tight linkage and velvety smooth actuation. The clutch is equally impressive, displaying a wonderfully progressive feel while riding a fine balance between resistive weight and easy application. I found myself shifting up and down through the gears when I really didn't need to just for fun. The Porsche zips to redline in a symphonic frenzy of whining and whirring mechanics, bouncing off the rev limiter without even a hiccup. It would probably hold redline all day long without cutting power if you were nasty enough to attempt it, but I'd be concerned for what it would do to the engine and electronics.
Jump on the brakes and the blurred scenery comes into sharp focus in a matter of seconds, no matter what speed you're entertaining. Power assisted dual circuit 4-wheel disc brakes with 1-piece 'monoblock' 4-piston fixed aluminum calipers do a sensational job, backed up by standard 4-wheel ABS.
More than just driving dynamics have been improved in the new Boxster. Immediately noticeable - to Porschephiles at least - are redesigned side-mounted air ducts that are more efficient and color-keyed to match the exterior paint - instead of black. New air intakes in the redesigned front fascia incorporate twin horizontal strakes up front, set at opposite ends of a beautifully integrated oval indentation. The fascia now extends lower with a new front lip, reducing drag and producing better airflow around the car. The reworked rear end now extends lower than last year's car, wrapping around the redesigned tailpipe for a more purposeful appearance. Updated taillights house new turn indicator light covers as well.
