Of even greater importance to everyday ownership is the replacement of the plastic rear window with glass, now sandwiching a rear defroster. Flick up one lever and press the console mounted button and the top quickly tucks neatly under one of the slickest all-metal tonneau covers to date - a 12 second procedure. The top itself is new too, now with a fourth bracket supporting a rounder shape that integrates better with the cars overall design. It not only benefits appearances, but provides a cleaner surface to sweep air toward the redesigned rear spoiler, that rises from the rear deck at 120 km/h (75 mph) and retracts at 80 km/h (50 mph).

The interior has been upgraded to 911 standards including a leather steering wheel, gearshift lever, door handles and handbrake lever color-keyed to the upholstery, plus the removal of the heating and air-conditioning controls from the console to the dash, improving accessibility. A new face-plate for the Bose equipped audio system is also a big improvement. An even bigger improvement is the optional Communication Management system (PCM), incorporating tuners, CD player, navigation system and trip computer all linked through a new Media-Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) digital databus - yes once again Porsche brings us more creative acronyms. The MOST system uses light-wave conductors to exchange data between components with less of a loss in data quality. The entire package simplifies the look and execution of commonly used controls.

Porsche derives its sophisticated cupholder from the 911. As clever as this intricately engineered masterpiece of automotive gadgets is, it pops out of the dash just above the new HVAC and audio system, or new PCM interface depending on options, blocking visibility to and use of either of these systems. What's more, I wouldn't want sticky soda to spill on the expensive electronics beneath it.
