Like all Saturn models the ION is comprised of polymer composite vertical panels and galvanized steel in critical areas. Its high-strength steel spaceframe with full-length frame rails and steel safety cage design has previously shown above average crash test results boding well for the new car. A galvanized steel hood, roof and decklid add to its stiffness while polymer door, quarter panels and fascias make for easy and less expensive body repair.

The interior features a center-mounted instrument cluster similar in concept to the Toyota Echo. Does this mean GM has plans to export the ION to right-hand drive markets or is it more of a trendy styling statement? It could be both or neither as the Delta platform that the ION is based on was slated to provide the starting point for the next Opel/Vauxhaul Astra (the latter right-hand drive) and Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire, although reports have suggested that both may not use the Delta platform after all. We'll have to wait and see. Nevertheless the ION has reportedly improved Saturn's interior plastics quality and general fit and finish to levels closer to its Ford Focus competitor - the class leader next to the Volkswagen Golf.

Unique features such as theater-style rear seating, variable-ratio steering, front and rear head-curtain side air bags, interchangeable roof rails that can be color coordinated with interior trim accessories and GM's OnStar safety and security system are available. Three trim designations - ION 1, ION 2 and ION 3 - were more creatively conceived than named. The base ION 1 package includes front console with open storage and two cupholders, front and rear floormats, adjustable rake steering wheel with multi-function switch, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, a 4-speaker AM/FM stereo, height-adjustable front shoulder belts with pretensioners and energy absorbing retractors plus rear seat child comfort guides and Lower Anchors and top Tethers for Children (LATCH system).
