Also like all Saturns, however, the fit and finish and engine refinement in the ION are a little lacking when stacked up against the Japanese vehicles the ION competes against. Still, it represents a big leap forward for the under-$30,000 economy class.

| The fit and finish of the ION is a little lacking when compared to its Asian competitors, and the 140-hp 2.2-L engine is buzzy as high revs. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press) |
All IONs are powered by a 140-horsepower 2.2-litre four cylinder engine, and while the powerplant is efficient in terms of gas consumptION, the engine noise, particularly at high speeds, is intrusive and buzzy.
Front disc/rear drum brakes are standard on all ION models, but ABS systems are available as an optION. My tester came with the latter, and I found the brake performance to be up to the job.

| Aesthetics set the ION apart. With its funky rear doors and well laid out centre instrument cluster, it has a unique appearance and feel. (Photo: General Motors) |
As mentIONed, though, it is the aesthetics as much as the mechanics that sets the ION apart. The rear doors add such a unique dimensION to the coupe design and utility that I can't help but think you'll see other manufacturers design similar doors into coming models.
Inside, the ION is comfortable and well laid out, with a centre instrument cluster giving the interior a unique appearance and feel.
