While distinctly proportioned there is no guessing as to its heritage. Jin Kim, the FJ Cruiser's 25-year old exterior designer who I just happened to be crouching next to during the new concept's press introduction, stated, "The FJ Cruiser takes on an authentic functional form, yet adopts several styling cues from the original FJ." He continued, "Some of these cues are notable on the front end by its wide and narrow grille, round headlights, and offset combination lamps. Additional inspiration can be found through its upright windshield and two-tone cap roof."

But its front-end styling isn't all that reminds of the old FJ40. Kim went on to say, "Traits are also noticeable in the rear with wrapping rear corner windows. The modern shape of the FJ Cruiser is woven into a compact package. Its proportionally long wheelbase and wide track produce enhanced stability and a powerful stance."

While this interpretation of the FJ is a little more 'Robocop' than I prefer, especially when viewed from the side profile, its front end styling is particularly attractive. Also the concept's C-pillar probably too thick to allow for reasonable rear visibility.

Of course, a modern concept can't only be about style in order to be taken seriously. The FJ sports utilitarian features worthy of the Land Cruiser name, such as spotlights on both outside mirrors, an asymmetrical front spotlight, plus a front-end towing winch.

Its 'cool' factor is enhanced with a two-piece glass rear panel that retracts into the roof resulting in a large opening for easy access into the cargo area. The FJ uses rear access doors, opening in clamshell fashion to improve entrance into the back seats.
