With years of service in mind it makes sense to be practical. Fortunately, despite its racy exterior design, the Matrix fits the pragmatic image well. Not just because of its commodious wagon configuration - 617 L (21.8 cu ft) of cargo space with the 60/40 split rear seats in place or 1,506 L (53.2 cu ft) when folded flat - but also because of its cargo area tie-down rings, grocery bag hooks and storage compartments on the sides and underneath the rear floor. Also, Toyota included its handy but optional 2-pouch cloth seatback storage system that includes one pouch specifically designated for first aid - the actual first aid kit is optional too.

Other stand alone options include all-weather floor mats, a brushed aluminum dash kit, block heater, cargo liner, cargo net, hood deflector, side vent visors, rear spoiler, security system and more. All models also include dual stage front airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters, plus adjustable B-pillar shoulder belt anchors.

But it's not the sum of its parts that makes the Matrix such a great car. It has more to do with its extremely high build quality, tight suspension and drivetrain, great performance and all-condition functionality. Actually, I was so impressed with the Matrix that I recommended it to my Dad and his wife who were looking to buy a new car at the time. They drove it, loved it and bought a RAV4. Hey, life can't always work out to benefit my latest article. Still, they now own a new Toyota and therefore should get years of reliable ownership plus a decent resale value when it comes time to trade up.

Whatever you want to call it - crossover, SUV, sport wagon, station wagon or even shooting brake - the Matrix is one of the best in its class.
