Breathing New Life into the VW Brand

Aside from being hard at work putting the final details on the production Golf Mk V, and the two new variants of the subcompact Polo, not available in North America, Volkswagen has yet another special treat for those who will be attending the Frankfurt's IAA, as well as those who are fans of lightweight sporty roadsters.

In need of a sporting concept since the official death of the Nardo, better known as the W12 Coupé/Spyder, Volkswagen has come up with the sports car purist's dream. The Concept R Roadster could very well be competition to the Mazda Miata, Nissan 350Z Roadster and Pontiac's recently announced Solstice, etal.

As sporty as it is elegant, the Concept R is a bold change in direction from typical VW design. (Photo: Volkswagen AG)

Cool, calm and... aggressive? The icy-blue Concept R is as sporty as it is elegant; putting a twist on what has become traditional Volkswagen design language. Though it's hard to recognize, this concept sports the new corporate face, albeit in a chromed, double-decker 'V' shape. Two deeply inset 'mouths' that suck in air to feed the engine while cooling the brakes are mounted below the combination LED/projector beam headlamps.
